BETWEEN THE NOTES

with Travis Knights and Andre Brewster

An intimate 6 week jazz-tap concert series where music, story, and real conversation come together to explore what it means to be human.

MAY 9TH - Revolution

Jazz is a music of revolution.

It disrupted social boundaries, created unlikely connections, and made space where there was none.

But what does revolution actually look like?

This session moves through the energy of the Swing Era and the Harlem Renaissance, not as history, but as a living question:  What does it mean to challenge the world we inherit?

MAY 30TH - Lost and Found

Where do we lose ourselves, and what brings us back?

This session moves through the lives and music of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane, tracing the line between creation and collapse.

It’s not about answers.
It’s about sitting with the tension between brilliance, struggle, and the search for meaning.

JUNE 13TH - Jass

What’s in a name?

Before “jazz” became a global language, it was something else, contested, reshaped, and often misunderstood.

This session is about identity, authorship, and the tension between being named and naming yourself.

A space to question what we inherit, and what we choose to reclaim.

MAY 16TH - Joy As Rebellion

What does it mean to choose joy when the world isn’t built for you?

Through the legacy of Bill Robinson, we sit inside the paradox of the smile, its elegance, its pressure, its power.

This is not nostalgia.
It’s an inquiry into joy as agency, as resistance, and as something far more complex than it appears.

JUNE 6TH - Death of the Revolution

What happens after the moment of change?

When energy settles… when systems adapt… when the new becomes familiar.

This session explores the aftermath of the Harlem Renaissance and the quiet return to “normal,” asking:
Can the spirit of a revolution be sustained, or is it always at risk of being absorbed and forgotten?

JUNE 20TH - Love (Without Guarantees)

Can we love… without knowing how it ends?

Fear narrows us. It makes us hold back, protect, withdraw.

Jazz asks something different. It asks us to listen, to respond, to stay open in the moment.

This session is an offering:
to step forward with care, vulnerability, and presence without certainty.
